It is a number assigned by Narodowy Bank Polski to newly-founded banks, i.e. a unique bank identifier composed of 3 digits, and in the case of a cooperative bank – of 4 digits:
•in the case of cooperative banks, e.g:
8001 - Bank Spółdzielczy in Otwock,
9681 - Powiatowy Bank Spółdzielczy in Września,
•in the case of other banks, e.g.:
101 - Narodowy Bank Polski,
102 - Powszechna Kasa Oszczędności Bank Polski SA.
It is a 3, 4 or 5-digit symbol, also called “identifier”, at the beginning of a clearing code.
In order to identify a payment service provider maintaining the account (e.g. a bank), having the customer's payment account number in the List of institution tab, in the Institution number, Settlement number or Account number field, enter the customer's account number. After entering the number, a window will appear with information whether the account number is correct. If the customer's account number is correct, confirm it (by indicating it and clicking it) in the displayed window and pressing the "Search" button (magnifying glass icon). The account provider details will be displayed, as well as the organizational unit details with contact details. If the account number is incorrect, it will not be possible to identify the provider.

The file contains extended data about registered institutions, incl. data about the institution (e.g. NIP, LEI and GIIN numbers), data about all operating organisational units of banks performing tasks related to the processing of monetary settlements, information about opening hours and services available in the units, as well as detailed data about sort codes (including the date of generating the code).

Data in the plewibnra.txt and plewiba.xml files on the Narodowy Bank Polski website are updated subject to changes submitted by institutions, at the most once a week.
If you encounter problems converting the Polish fonts from txt into xls file, use coding "852: Central Europe (DOS)" in the "Creator of import" in Excel. Furthermore, in order to keep a proper format of the imported data, in the dialogue box allowing the specification of the type of data, please mark all the columns and choose „Text” format.”

If the nrRozliczeniowy (Sort Code) or nazwa (name) parameter is not specified, the system returns a list of all sort codes or a list of all institutions, respectively (and their organisational units, with their sort codes).
